True Friendship Is None of that Sissy Crap.

Thanks Stephanie... couldn't resist and had to post.. this one just "spoke" to me!! Wink

Are you tired of those sissy 'friendship' poems that always sound good, but never actually come close to reality?
Well, here is a series of promises that actually speak of true friendship.
You will see no cutesy little smiley faces on this card- Just the stone cold truth of our great friendship.

1. When you are sad --I will jump on the person who made you sad like a spider monkey.

2. When you are blue -- I will try to dislodge whatever is choking you.

3. When you smile -- I will know you are plotting something that I must
be involved in.

4. When you are scared -- I will rag on you about it every chance I get.

5. When you are worried -- I will tell you horrible stories about how
much worse it could be until you quit whining.

6. When you are confused -- I will use little words.

7. When you are sick --Stay away from me until you are well
again. I don't want whatever you have.

8. When you fall -- I will point and laugh at your clumsiness.

9. This is my oath...I pledge it to the end. 'Why?' you may ask;
'because you are my friend'.

Friendship is like peeing your pants:
everyone can see it, but only you can feel the true warmth.

My car is jinxed...

Seriously, I think my car is jinxed.  Since I've owned it, it has been hit 5 times.  The first time was approximately 2 weeks after I purchased it- a guy decided not to stop and plowed into the back of me.  The second time, I got hit in an airport parking lot (thank you nice person for leaving me a note- it's good to know there are honest people out there.)

Next came the most major accident- I was on my way back from a friend's house and was about 3 blocks from home- literally.  Again, the guy decided not to stop.  Hit hit me going about 40 miles an hour and I then hit the car in front of me.  It was ugly, but not quite ugly enough to total it and put it out of it's misery.  I was at about 55% damage and the car needed to be at 60% damage of the total value to be considered a loss.  So, it was repaired.

The latest two accidents happened back to back- one last Thursday and then the latest on Friday- yes, that's the very next day.  Thursday wasn't that big of a deal.  Guy hit my bumper backing out of a spot in Target- no damage.  Friday was another story.  I was at the eye doctor's, parked innocently- well between the lines of my own spot- and minding my own business picking out my new glasses.  After leaving the dr's (btw- got some great new glasses Smile), I got to my car to find my mirror pushed in on my driver's door, a huge scratch on the door itself, damage on the passenger door, and a dent over the wheel well along with more paint missing.  I immediately went to my windshield looking for the note- surely someone that did this much damage would have left me a note, apologizing profusely and giving me a way to reach them.  I'm sure you can guess the outcome here- no note- nada, nothing, zilch.  And none of the stores have cameras, so I'm out of luck.

Here's my dilema- I have a relatively new insurance company and this would be my second claim, though the one in April wasn't my fault either.  But I know that even claims that aren't your fault can impact your rate.  So, need to decide if I'm going to try and fix it myself or put it through insurance.  I'll likely end up having to do both...  I think the worse part of the whole thing is that I finally have the darn thing paid off and then this happens.. grrrr!  Would have been nice to drive around for awhile with no problems.  Oh well... it could have been much worse and at least no one got hurt.

One thing I will say though... is karma will come back and get that person- or at least I really, really, really hope it does.  What is wrong with people these days?!?

Curious minds want to know...

How does a dog learn how to open kitchen cabinets?!?  That's right... the other evening, my sweet, innocent (yeah, right!!) dog decided to open the door to the cabinet that hold my garbage can.

Let's just say that a really nice surprise was waiting for me when I got home. Tongue out  Not only did she tear through the bag, but she decided it would be a really good idea to spread the garbage around my kitchen, living room and dining room.  I even found an evidence trail going up my stairs.  And of course, I didn't need to say a word.  As soon as I walked through the door... she tip-toed up to me with her head hanging low and her tail between her legs.  And then she dropped down at my feet, rolled over and wagged her tail- if I didn't know better, I'd say it was her attempt at apologizing to me. lol

It's time I really invest in a nanny cam so I can see how she manages to do this stuff...  One thing I can say- she's the most resourceful dog I've ever had.. and I don't think that's necessarily a good thing. Confused

Vacation mode...

One word to describe my recent vacation in the Dominican Republic- BEAUTIFUL!  See for yourself in my photo album.  I was lucky enough to travel to Punta Cana earlier this month.  And I say lucky because this is a vacation destination that is being built up, much like Cancun was and I got to experience in the early days.  Everywhere I looked, construction was happening.  While it's great for the economy there, a part of me was a little sad because a lot of the natural beauty will be over taken by the monster hotels that are being built.

And yes, I did stay at a monster hotel- and I do realize the irony there- but thankfully, I traveled outside the resort and got to see the natural state of the countryside and shoreline and it was breathtaking.

Life is so different there from how we live in the U.S.- I learned that average salaries in the DR range from $220 - $300 a month, they lose power approx. 8 hours a day- everyday, gas costs upwards of $6.50 a gallon and land (non-ocean front) sells for about $5,000 an acre.  It's no wonder why it's hard to make ends meet there- as low as their salaries are, cost of living is still really high.  Life for people that live in the countryside is tough- many don't have running water.  And very few have electricity- given that power is out 8 hours + a day, they don't have a way to keep things cool so meals are cooked and consumed immediately and shopping is a daily occurence so things don't go bad.

Everyone I spoke with told me how vital tourism is to their economy.  That made me feel a little better about going back to my beautiful hotel every night, but I still couldn't help but feel guilty.  One thing that was refreshing to see- everywhere around me, people gave back to their communities.  In particular, one of the tours I took called the Outback Safari (http://outbacksafari.shoreadventures.net/), has adopted multiple schools and a couple of orphanages and donates a significant portion of their revenue to them.  This tour also encourages people to bring books and other school supplies and will drop them off while the tour is in session.

I could go on and on about my experiences- and will probably write more entries, but in the meantime check out my photos when you get a chance.  The DR is really an amazing place!

Each participating organization is guaranteed a minimum donation of $100,000 during the first year of the program.

Here are the causes you can choose from:

American Red Cross. The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters, taught lifesaving skills to millions, and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Boys & Girls Clubs of America comprises a national network of some 4,000 neighborhood-based facilities annually serving more than 4.6 million young people, in all 50 states and on U.S. military bases worldwide. Known as “The Positive Place for Kids,” the Clubs provide guidance-oriented character development programs daily. Key programs emphasize leadership development, education and career exploration, financial literacy, health and life skills, the arts, sports, fitness and recreation, and family outreach.

The National AIDS Fund. Since 1988, the National AIDS Fund (NAF) has been promoting leadership and generating resources for effective community responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. NAF continues to build healthy communities through an expanding network of Community Partnerships that support over 400 grass-roots organizations every year. These groups provide HIV prevention, care and support services to individuals and families most impacted by HIV/AIDS: youth, communities of color, women and gay men. NAF makes sure communities have access to the most effective programs for preventing HIV.

National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. MS stops people from moving. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. Founded in 1946, the Society helps each person address the challenges of living with MS through its 50-state network of Chapters. The Society funds more MS research, provides more services for people with MS, offers more professional education and furthers more advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world. The Society is dedicated to achieving a world free of MS. The Society wants to do something about MS now. Join the movement at http://nationalmssociety.org.

ninemillion.org. ninemillion.org is a UN Refugee Agency-led campaign to raise awareness and funds for 9 million refugee children around the world. Many of these children have suffered atrocities and are forced to spend years of their young lives away from home with little hope of returning. They have extremely limited access to education and often no opportunities to play. They are considered the most forgotten children in the world. ninemillion.org gives these children a voice, and the opportunity to a better future by providing innovative education and sport programs.

Sierra Club. Sierra Club is one of America’s oldest, largest and most influential grass-roots environmental organizations, and its members are more than 750,000 of your friends and neighbors. Inspired by nature, Sierra Club’s members work together to protect our communities and the planet. Since 1960, the Sierra Club and its members have worked to keep our air and water clean, and have protected more than 160 million acres of wild lands, including national treasures such as the Grand Canyon, the Florida Everglades, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

Stopglobalwarming.org. The Stop Global Warming Virtual March is a nonpartisan effort to bring citizens together to declare that global warming is here now and that it is time to demand solutions. Global warming is one of the most urgent issues of our time, and although the problem is of worldwide significance, the movement recognizes that the United States is the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases and doing the least about it. The necessary first step must be to encourage Americans to take action. This online grass-roots movement is about change — as individuals, as a country and as a global community. We are all contributors to global warming and must all be part of the solution.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest, most progressive grass-roots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.
